Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition affecting millions worldwide (National Psoriasis Foundation, n.d.). It presents itself as red, inflamed patches of skin covered with silvery scales. For those suffering from psoriasis, it can be frustrating and challenging to manage. Caregivers play a crucial role in supporting their loved ones and their clients with psoriasis, and in addition to medical treatments, exploring natural remedies can be beneficial in managing symptoms. In this article, we will discuss five natural remedies that caregivers should know to help ease discomfort and improve the quality of life for psoriasis patients.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera has long been used for its healing properties, particularly in treating skin conditions. Its gel contains numerous vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that can soothe inflamed skin and promote healing (Surjushe et al., 2008). Applying pure aloe vera gel directly to the affected areas for psoriasis patients can help reduce redness, itching, and scaling. Regular use of aloe vera may also aid in maintaining the skin's moisture, preventing dryness, and minimizing flare-ups.

Oatmeal Baths:

Oatmeal baths are a simple and effective natural remedy for relieving the symptoms of psoriasis. Oats have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe itchy, irritated skin (Reynertson et al., 2015). To create an oatmeal bath, caregivers can grind plain oats into a fine powder and mix it into a warm (not hot) bath. Soaking in this soothing bath for about 15-20 minutes can provide relief from itching and irritation, leaving the skin feeling more comfortable and moisturized.

Fish Oil Supplements:

Fish oil supplements are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects (Senftleber et al., 2014). These fatty acids can help reduce the inflammation associated with psoriasis and alleviate symptoms such as redness and scaling. Caregivers should consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplements, as proper dosage and quality are essential for effectiveness.

Turmeric:

Turmeric is a powerful spice with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (Hewlings & Kalman, 2017). Its active compound, curcumin, has shown promising results in reducing inflammation associated with psoriasis. Caregivers can incorporate turmeric into the patient's diet by adding it to various dishes or mixing it with warm milk for a soothing beverage. Topical application of turmeric paste may also help reduce skin inflammation and redness.

Sunlight Exposure:

Natural sunlight can be beneficial for psoriasis patients due to its ability to slow down skin cell growth and reduce inflammation (National Psoriasis Foundation, n.d.). However, being cautious about excessive sun exposure is essential, as sunburn can worsen psoriasis symptoms. Caregivers should work with healthcare professionals to determine the right amount of sun exposure and follow appropriate sun protection measures.

While there is no cure for psoriasis, incorporating natural remedies into the treatment plan can significantly improve the quality of life for patients. As caregivers, supporting your loved ones with psoriasis means exploring a holistic approach that combines medical treatments with these natural remedies. Aloe vera, oatmeal baths, fish oil supplements, turmeric, and controlled sunlight exposure are all safe and effective ways to alleviate symptoms and reduce inflammation.

However, it's essential to remember that psoriasis affects individuals differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, consulting with a healthcare professional before introducing new remedies or supplements is crucial. Caregivers can play a vital role in helping their loved ones manage psoriasis and lead a more comfortable life with proper care and attention.
